Moore Payne Law Files Florida Class Action Against Kidde and Amazon Over Smoke Alarm Safety Claims
Moore Payne Law, in conjunction with Normand PLLC and Turnbull Injury Law, has filed a class action lawsuit in Florida against Walter Kidde Portable Equipment, Inc. and Amazon.com, Inc., alleging that Kidde sold ionization-only smoke alarms for decades without adequately warning consumers about their limitations in detecting the smoke from common residential fires.
With this filing, Florida becomes the third state to join the action against Kidde, following California and Washington — addressing a nationwide consumer-safety issue affecting nearly half of U.S. households.
The complaint alleges ionization alarms respond significantly slower to smoldering fires — among the most common and deadliest residential fire scenarios — and that Kidde continued selling the cheaper ionization-only models despite internal acknowledgment that photoelectric alarms perform better in smoke-heavy conditions. Federal agencies including NIST have long urged the industry toward photoelectric or dual-sensor technology.
